Performance and Speed Checks – Faster is Better!

So your website is built, your clients are pouring in & your content is steadily flowing. As more traffic hits your content, you start to notice a small delay in your performance and speed but it’s only about 5 seconds or so. Not too bad right? Well it may come as a surprise to you but google has recently compiled research that indicates “53% of mobile site visits leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load.”

The Importance of Performance and Speed Checks

It’s just 3 seconds but the bounce rate (the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page) increases from 32% (under 3 seconds)

to 90% if the delay is up to 5 seconds. Simply put, if your website takes longer than 3 seconds to load, you can lose around 58% more potential clientele.

Let’s face it, in our fast-paced society we are often spoiled. If we didn’t have to wait in long lines or traffic, we would take an alternate route. Since website are capable of being built for speed, google sees this as an opportunity to rank websites higher.

What can you do to increase Performance and Speed?

This battle is a joint effort in order to keep speeds optimized. Often times people feel the flashier stuff on a website like a movie in the header or lots of scrolling images will gain more views but that’s not always true.

Research shows that most people won’t sit on your home page & watch your full movie in the header or scroll through the 7 images you have. In fact, a more simplistic layout with properly mapped actions will keep your website loading fast & clients pouring in.

This doesn’t mean you can’t use a slider in your header (we do) or have some scrolling images. This simply means that for most optimal speeds, it’s best to reduce the amount of large moving displays. In nerd speak, each animation calls multiple scripts. These scripts take time to load. Although they generally load in milliseconds, if you are calling 39 scripts in total at .19ms a piece, it can add up to over 5 additional seconds for your website to load. Remember what we said above, 90% of your clients will leave if your website takes 5 seconds or longer to load.

With that being said, we will constantly monitor your performance and speed. We will also provide any feedback we may have in the event that we are not able to optimize the content in

Our Role at Designed by Ace

In conclusion, you can easily speed up your page by reducing necessary animations, videos, or scripts but often times, many are needed. All websites Designed by Ace go through an initial scrub. During this scrub, we check the following:

  • Server is optimized
  • Optimize style & script order (scripts generally take longer to load & can be placed in the footer to reduce load times)
  • Provide proper browser caching
  • Shrink (minify) CSS, JavaScript’s, & HTML
  • Compress images

After the scrub is completed, we review the baseline numbers & make tweaks as necessary. More often than not, your page will load around the 2 second mark at this point & is already within the 1-3 second range.

Now we can ensure google will not penalize you for a slow website & your ranking should naturally increase as your traffic continues to flow without high bounce rates!
